Most of us have heard of the term “Mentor.”

Our first impression of a “Mentor” is usually that of a successful individual who has “been there, done that.”

I’ve read many definitions of a mentor; but here’s the one that I like and identify with the most:

“A mentor is someone with more experience than you in your field of expertise, and who serves as a trusted confidante over an extended period of time.”

In that sense, a mentor is like a coach.

In this day and age, having a mentor in your chosen endeavour is imperative for you to reach your goal in the shortest possible time. Why would you want to enroll in the “school of hard knocks” when a guide is almost always available to help you along the way?

What then, are the tangible benefits of choosing a good mentor?

As endless as I think the benefits are, I’d like to narrow the list down to the top 5. In particular, because my chosen field of expertise is Forex, much of what I share comes from my personal experience in the field of Forex.

Treasure #1: Accountability

A mentor is there to ensure that you are “on target.” Many a time, we are actually clear of the task at hand, but nature sometimes takes it course and we tend to “slack off.”

A mentor serves to make you, the mentee, accountable for your tasks and goals. There must be commitment on both sides. Firstly, for the mentee to do the necessary work required and secondly, for the mentor to provide the necessary guidance so that the mentee doesn’t veer off-course.

Treasure #2: Affirmation

In the book “You Can Heal Your Life” by Louise Hay, the author recounts how scores of her clients have an ingrained belief of “I am not good enough.”

Most of them formed such beliefs in their early childhood because growing up was rough; no one took them seriously and their parents were always chiding them for doing things wrong.

One of the best gifts a mentor can give to the mentee is the gift of positive affirmation. By this I mean continuous and loving support. All of us need to know that “it is ok to screw up”, and that we can always count on someone to encourage us and support our learning process along the way.

Treasure #3: Assessment

A good mentor tracks the progress of the mentee. How would you know how far you’ve gone if there isn’t a yardstick to measure progress in the first place? Depending on the discipline or nature of the expertise, different mentors have a different way of assessing the growth of the mentee. It is with the constant cycle of action, review and evaluation that true change is initiated and cemented.

Yes, think HOMEWORK!

Treasure #4: Advice

Haven’t we all been at the place where we just felt like throwing in the towel?

“It’s too hard! and “I can’t do it!” become the standard mantra in these situations. This is where the experience and counsel of the mentor comes in.

While some mentors may be tempted to say “Yes! An elephant can learn faster than you!” (ok, I threw that one in to add a little spice), most mentors would know how to apply coaching techniques to provide the mentee with options, possible solutions and specific directions to carry on.

Mentors know that blocks and obstacles are part and parcel of winning the game.

Think Newton’s 3rd Law:For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

With sound counsel and coaching, it would be no time before the mentee is up on his/her feet again and moving towards his/her desired goal.

Treasure #5: Assets

Regardless of the chosen field, a mentor is able to provide valuable assets to the mentee along the way.

Assets can be in the form of resources like a book, an audio tape or maybe even a specific contact. It is basically a solution to help the mentee press on. Without the advantage of having this quality in a mentor, the mentee can spend precious time “going around in circles” and not really finding the solution to the problem at hand.

Do you know who Nicol David is?

Nicol David is currently ranked the World Number 1 in women’s squash, the first Asian woman to achieve this prestigious accolade. She won the British Open title in 2005, 2006 and 2008, as well as the World Open title in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Nicol has also obtained the WISPA (Women’s International Squash Players Association) Player of the Year on five consecutive occasions, from 2005 until 2009.

Outstanding achievements for sure.

Do you know who Liz Irving is?

Probably not.

She’s the coach who has managed to build Nicol into the Champion she is today. She’s the person whom Nicol turns to when she has difficulties with her strokes, her psyche, her attitude. Liz is always there to Affirm, Advise and Assess.

Is mentorship important? Without a doubt.

The same goes with Forex Trading. If you are serious about walking this path, get yourself a mentor. Not only will it save you precious time, it cuts short your learning curve, instills correct trading habits in your system and propels you to consistent profits faster.

Early on in my trading career, I was fortunate to be mentored by some of the best Forex Traders in the world, Kathy Lien and Ed Ponsi.

Among the two of them, they occupy the TOP 2 SPOTS in the best-selling Forex books OF ALL TIME.

Have their mentorship made a difference to my trading? Without a doubt.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Friends, you become a part of who you are around. If you decide to stay in the Forex arena, make sure you get a solid mentor who can guide you along the way.

I promise you, the treasures are more than you can imagine.

What is 1-dimensional?

Most would say its a line, but if you think about it, once a line takes “form” in the physical realm, it is immediately governed by the 2-dimensional plane. This is because when the line is drawn, it now has length and width.

This means that the term “1-dimensional” is purely imaginary. For it to actually exist, it must be governed by the rules of the 2-dimensional plane.

What is 2-dimensional?

A 2-dimensional object, similarly, is governed by the rules of the 3-dimensional realm once it takes physical form. A simple square, conceived as having length and width, will become a 3-dimensional object when it takes physical form. When you can physically see and touch this square, it now has length, width and height.

This follows that any 3-dimensional object is governed by the 4-dimensional realm.

Here’s where it gets interesting. We humans, are 3-dimensional beings. However, since we have a physical form, we are automatically governed by the 4-dimensional realm. Hence, if you want to change results in the 3-dimensional world, you have to engage the rules in the 4th dimension to achieve the result.

What then, are the rules of the 4th dimension?

There are two: THOUGHTS and WORDS.

If you are doubtful that thoughts and words have the ability to change results in the 3-dimensional world, allow me to offer some examples.

THOUGHTS

It was previously THOUGHT that running a mile under 4 minutes was impossible. That was until a man called Roger Bannister came along.

After the devastation of his failure at the 1952 Olympics, Bannister spent two months deciding whether to give up running. He decided on a new goal: To be the first man to run a mile in under four minutes. Accordingly, he intensified his training and did hard intervals.

On 2 May, 1953, he made an attempt on the British record at Oxford. Paced by Chris Chataway, Bannister ran 4:03.6, shattering Wooderson’s 1945 standard. “This race made me realise that the four-minute mile was not out of reach,” said Bannister.

Roger changed his THOUGHTS & BELIEFS about running the mile in sub-4 minutes. Everything he did from then on followed his thoughts.

The historic event took place on 6th May 1954.

The race was broadcast live by BBC Radio and commented on by Harold Abrahams, of Chariots of Fire fame.

His comments went:

“Ladies and gentlemen, here is the result of event 9, the one mile: 1st, No. 41, R.G. Bannister, Amateur Athletic Association and formerly of Exeter and Merton Colleges, Oxford, with a time which is a new meeting and track record, and which – subject to ratification – will be a new English Native, British National, All-Comers, European, British Empire and World Record. The time was 3…”

The roar of the crowd drowned out the rest of the announcement. Bannister’s time was 3 min 59.4 sec.

Interestingly, just 12 months after Roger set this new record, 37 people ran the mile in under 4 minutes. To date, close to ONE THOUSAND people have done the mile in under 4 minutes.

All it took was ONE MAN to change his THOUGHTS before he saw the RESULTS come alive.

WORDS

Dr. Emoto is best known for his work entitled “Messages from Water.” He famously showed how WORDS affected the formation of untreated, distilled, water crystals. Using words typed onto paper and taped on glass bottles overnight, the waters were then frozen and photographed. The evidence was startling.

The water crystals which had words like “THANK YOU”, “LOVE” and “APPRECIATION” showed beautifully formed geometric designs in their crystalline patterns. Conversely, water crystals which had words like “YOU MAKE ME SICK” and “I WILL KILL YOU” showed definitively distorted and randomly formed crystalline structures.

The make-up of the human body is over 75% water. This simple yet profound experiment shows that we can positively heal and transform ourselves by the words we speak.

Here’s 2 more quick examples on the power of words:

1) Read the book “Speeches That Changed The World” by Simon Sebag Montefiore. What are speeches made of? WORDS.

2) How did Barack Obama, initially reckoned as a complete outsider, become the 44th President of the United States? Did he have a track record of results to usher him into the Oval Office? Not exactly! It was his WORDS that inspired hope and change.

My friends, listen.

If you want to RADICALLY CHANGE your current results in life, the solution is to CHANGE THE THOUGHTS YOU THINK AND CHANGE THE WORDS YOU SPEAK.

“We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.” -Buddha

“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” -Rudyard Kipling

What does it take to be successful?

Let me ask that question more specifically. What does it take to attain mastery in a subject? Any subject.

In his book “Outliers,” Malcolm Gladwell explores why some people succeed, living remarkably productive and impactful lives, while so many more never reach their potential.

Challenging our cherished belief of the “self-made man,” he makes the democratic assertion that superstars don’t arise out of nowhere, propelled by genius and talent: “they are invariably the beneficiaries of hidden advantages and extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies that allow them to learn and work hard and make sense of the world in ways others cannot.”

A key point in his book is that Malcolm asserts the fact that “MASTERY” in any subject takes about 10,000 hours to attain.

As I ponder more on this question, I’m convinced that MASTERY is modeled upon the evolutionary phases of Learning, Earning and Creating (L.E.C.). Mastery in any aspect of life hinges upon these 3 phases.

Lets delve deeper on this subject and take a look at 4 key areas that make up the “Circle of Life” itself, and 4 people that have attained mastery in these areas:

1) Food

2) Sports

3) Arts/Entertainment

4) Business

Food

ferran-adria-el-bulli

Famed legendary head chef of the El Bulli restaurant in Spain, Ferran Adria is considered one of the best chefs in the world and tops the European Restaurant Ranking.

Under his leadership, El Bulli has attained 3 Michelin Stars and was voted the best restaurant in the world in 2006, 2007 and 2008. El Bulli is famous for being the ultimate pilgrimage site for foodies, and a reservation that is nearly impossible to obtain.

Each year El Bulli is open for just six months, and receives more than 2 million requests for only 8,000 seats. Renowned for his spectacular ever-changing 30-course tasting menu, Adria’s pioneering culinary techniques have been applauded – and imitated – by top chefs around the globe for the past decade, and he was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of our time.

Sports

Australia Open Tennis

Currently recognised as the World Number 1 tennis player, Roger Federer has won 16 Grand Slam singles titles, more than any other male player in history. He is one of only six male players to have captured the career Grand Slam.

Federer also holds the record of reaching 10 consecutive Grand Slam finals and has appeared in 18 of the last 19. As a result of his successes in tennis, Federer was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for four consecutive years (2005–2008).

Arts/Entertainment

Michelangelo was the best-documented artist of the 16th century. Two of his best-known works, the Pietà and David, were sculpted before he turned thirty. Michelangelo also created two of the most influential works in fresco in the history of Western art: the scenes from Genesis on the ceiling and The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

In a demonstration of Michelangelo’s unique standing, he was the FIRST Western artist whose biography was published while he was alive. In his lifetime he was also often called Il Divino (“The Divine One”).

One of the qualities most admired by his contemporaries was his terribilità, a sense of awe-inspiring grandeur, and it was the attempts of subsequent artists to imitate Michelangelo’s impassioned and highly personal style that resulted in Mannerism, the next major movement in Western art after the High Renaissance.

Business

donald-trump

Donald Trump is an American business magnate, socialite, television personality, and author. He is the Chairman and CEO of the Trump Organization, a US-based real-estate developer.

Trump is also the founder of Trump Entertainment Resorts, which operates numerous casinos and hotels across the world. Trump’s extravagant lifestyle and outspoken manner have made him a celebrity for years, a status amplified by the success of his NBC reality show, The Apprentice (where he serves as host and executive producer).

A self-made BILLIONAIRE, he continually strives to create market space in his area of expertise.

So check it out. What do you see as the COMMON THREAD among all four of them? Didn’t they pass through the phases of Learning, Earning and Creating to attain mastery in their chosen fields?

1) Ferran Adria LEARNED about being a great chef, EARNED millions as a top head chef, and has CREATED amazing experiences in “molecular gastronomy” and “culinary foams.”

2) Federer LEARNED about playing great tennis, EARNED millions from it, and has gone on to CREATE consistent results on the ATP tour year after year.

3) Michelangelo LEARNED about art, EARNED millions from it, and CREATED countless masterpieces thereafter in the areas of sculpture, painting and even poetry.

4) Trump LEARNED about real estate from his father Fred, EARNED millions from it and currently CREATES many business ventures that span across real estate, casinos, beauty pageants and TV shows.

A Forex Trader is no different. He must pass through the phases of Learning, Earning and Creating to MASTER his financial destiny in the markets.

In the Learning Phase, a trader understands certain principles like Market Structure, Trading Concepts and Trading Platform.

In the Earning Phase, a trader understands the EXACT keys that will enable him to slice profits off the market. When he should buy, when he should sell and when he should stay out.

In the Creating Phase, a trader has identified the specific steps & rules he needs to NOT ONLY create his trading system, but execute it faithfully so that he generates consistent returns.

So that explains the Circle Of Life.

LEC

Many traders make the FATAL MISTAKE of abandoning their trading system after a couple of negative results. This is when the get “stuck” and don’t push ahead to achieve consistent results.

Listen. Losses are part of the game. No one wins every trade.

No one.

In Forex, you can “win & be wrong” but you can also “lose and be right.”

Getting fixated with “ratio of winning trades to losing ones” is a loser’s game. Don’t go down that path.

Let’s focus on “trading right first.” Profits will almost always follow as an after-thought.

The surest way for your account to grow is when you achieve MASTERY. The steps, again, are Learning, Earning and Creating. Creating is the all-important phase. This is when habits have been ingrained, and you are now repeating your actions on a consistent basis to generate significant results.

When you are at this stage, here’s the BONUS -you would have mastered yourself.

This is when you are truly, an UNSTOPPABLE human being.

“The epitome of success is mastery. The essence of mastery is creation.” -Mario Singh

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act but a habit.” -Aristotle
