THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: How do you see the impact on industry and the economy of further tightening of work pass rules over time?

This is not an easy task to calibrate. On one hand, rules need to be fairly relaxed to ensure that sectors such as construction and marine shipyard do not face a labour shortage. On the other hand, rules need to be tightened to acknowledge the concerns that some Singaporeans may feel over perceived unfairness in hiring practices.

I endorse the move to tighten work pass rules gradually because it serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it still allows the company to attract the required talent to handle the job, thereby enabling the company to grow and sink roots in Singapore. Secondly, it provides Singaporeans with the bandwidth to grow, upskill and reskill ourselves to remain competitive and possibly handle those jobs in the future.
