THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: What do you think of Singapore’s plan to phase out internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2040?

IT is welcome news to hear the government’s forward-thinking initiative of phasing out ICE vehicles by 2040. Air pollution is a big factor in the global fight against climate change. In a recent report by Swiss-based group IQ AirVisual that measured the most polluted capital cities in the world, Singapore came in a respectable 43rd with New Delhi topping the rankings for the second year running.

There are overall benefits of adopting electric vehicles (EVs) in Singapore; namely better air quality and a significant reduction in fuel excise duties which currently amount to about S$1 billion annually. However, there are two areas to look at to ensure the overall success of the programme. Firstly, incentives or concessions could be considered for existing EV owners, who would become even greater advocates for the plan going forward. Secondly, continuous education on the benefits of adopting EVs over petrol/diesel cars which include lesser pollution and greater mileage.
