THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Apart from health and economic consequences, will Covid-19 also spell a big reset in terms of how we work? As an employer, how open are you to large-scale work-from-home in your organisation?

On Feb 2, Bloomberg ran an article entitled Coronavirus Forces World’s Largest Work-From-Home Experiment. Since then, governments the world over have imposed even stricter measures like a full lockdown, border control and social distancing.

While these measures are certainly necessary to contain the pandemic, Covid-19 has upended the business world. Telecommuting and teleconferencing have now become the new normal. The good news is that there are certainly advantages to flexible work arrangements.

Last year, a survey of 7,000 workers by FlexJobs showed that 65% of them reported higher productivity working from home, citing benefits like fewer interruptions from colleagues, minimal office politics and reduced stress from commuting. A 2019 Harvard University study also found that those given the freedom to work from anywhere were 4.4 per cent more productive than those who had rigid workplace requirements.

Some of our staff within Fullerton Markets already have work-from-home arrangements. In this day and age, what I am most concerned with is productivity and efficiency to grow the company. Location is immaterial.
