THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Should there be enhanced laws against gender discrimination at the workplace? Beyond board representation, how else can businesses support the development of women?
It needs to be emphasised that gender diversity in the workplace has vastly more advantages for all stakeholders involved. Research has shown that some of these positives include better collaboration, stronger creativity and even greater bottom-line profitability.
Besides board representation, three areas where businesses can support the development of women are remuneration, recruitment and retention. Firstly, employers need to ensure there is no bias against women in remuneration. Secondly, in recruitment, HR policies need to be scrubbed to ensure that female candidates are not unintentionally overlooked. Finally, companies need to ensure there are no obstacles impeding the progress of women as they climb the corporate ladder within the organisation.
