For many, being an entrepreneur and owning a business is the dream life, mainly because if you do things right, it can guarantee you success and return on investment. It’s also highly rewarding to be able to provide jobs, to nurture and grow a team, and through your solutions, help improve the world.

It isn’t always easy, though. Many successful business people we know today started from the bottom and worked their way to the top. You have to have the right mindset, knowledge, skills, and a little bit of luck to make your business grow.

As an entrepreneur myself, I wish to impart a little of my wisdom to those who want to start on this journey.

Never Underestimate the Power of Knowledge

While a lot of successful entrepreneurs did not have a business degree, they were knowledgeable in their fields. Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of social media giant Facebook, was first into writing and coding software. He took up psychology and computer science during his time at Harvard. Zuckerberg spent hours upon hours studying and practising programming techniques before he became the internet entrepreneur we know today. The key lesson? Gather as much knowledge as you can before turning it into a business.

To Achieve Great Things, You Must Work For It

When we think of successful people behind big company names, we often think that this greatness was handed to them. They must be the lucky few picked to lead big corporations that are continuously changing the world, but in my experience, these people became great because they worked hard for it.

Entrepreneurship will test you to your wits’ end, and you will have to make a lot of crucial decisions. You have to push through those obstacles if you want to be great at things not just in the field of business, but also in life.

Failures Happen

Before Thomas Edison invented the incandescent light bulb, he tested a lot of materials thousands of times before he found the perfect filament that would be used in the first light bulb that electrified homes. If he had let those failures get to him, humanity’s progress would have been set back by a couple of years, if not a decade or more. His determination and invention immensely improved the lives of people in the 19th century and opened doors for further improvements (like the tungsten filaments primarily used today) and more discoveries (think LED lights, often considered the future of lighting).

As humans, we will fail – occasionally and repeatedly – but it’s what we do after failing that truly counts.

Entrepreneurship Can Be Ruthless

You must have the courage and guts if you want to enter this field. There will be people who will want to take advantage of you, and they will do so unexpectedly. There have been many cases of businesses closing down or going under because they let their guard down. With the prevalence of social media and the ease with which false information is spread online, brand reputations can take a hit and be destroyed in a short time.

Entrepreneurship can be highly rewarding, but always keep in mind that in order to reach the peak, you have to be prepared to go through the highs and lows of the journey.

To your success,

Mario
